ChatGPT Agent Mode Alternatives: What Replaced It (ChatGPT Work)

ChatGPT agent mode has been retired. OpenAI's help page now reads: "ChatGPT agent is no longer available. Use ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks and finished deliverables." Work launched on July 9, 2026, and the agent notice was up by mid-July. ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's browser, was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. For most people who used agent mode, the replacement is ChatGPT Work, and it is already in the plan they pay for. A ChatGPT agent mode alternative from outside OpenAI only makes sense in a few specific cases.

The rest of this post covers the name changes in order, what Work does, what was lost along the way, and those cases. All facts are as of September 15, 2026.

What replaced ChatGPT agent mode?#

ChatGPT Work. In the ChatGPT app there is a Chat/Work switch at the top of the message box. Pick Work, describe the result you want, and it keeps working in the background while you follow along. It comes back with something finished: a document, a spreadsheet, a slide deck, a report or a small hosted site.

There is a second change underneath. The same day Work launched, OpenAI turned the Codex desktop app into the new ChatGPT desktop app. Chat, Work and Codex now share one app, and the old ChatGPT desktop app became ChatGPT Classic. Classic still gets model updates and security fixes, but OpenAI's release notes say new agent features such as Work are in the new app. Classic does not have Work. If you are on the desktop, can't find Work, and your app says Classic, that is why.

A timeline: Operator → agent → Workspace Agents → Work#

Part of the confusion is that OpenAI shipped five names in about 18 months, and some of them overlap.

Workspace agents are not the same thing as Work. A workspace agent is something a company builds once and shares with a team, for example in Slack. Work is the personal "do this job for me" mode that took over from agent mode. If you are on Plus or Pro, workspace agents are not for you.

What does ChatGPT Work actually do?#

Per OpenAI's launch post and help pages, as of September 2026:

• Finished files. Sheets, slides, docs and reports. It can also build "Sites", hosted websites and small apps you share by URL. At launch, Sites was not available on Free or Go, or in the UK, EEA or Switzerland.
• Long runs. Work splits a job into steps and keeps going without you watching.
• Your apps. A plugins library connects tools such as Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, Outlook, calendars and CRMs. You can @-mention a plugin in the prompt to point Work at it.
• Triggers. A task can run once, on a schedule, or as a monitor. On paid plans, on web and mobile, it can also start when a new Gmail message, Slack message or GitHub pull request arrives.
• Desktop extras. In the desktop app, Work also gets a built-in browser, access to local files and apps, and computer use.

Cloud Work vs local Work#

This split matters more than the new name does:

• Cloud Work runs on OpenAI's machines. You start it from the web, your phone or the desktop app, and the conversation syncs across all three. It keeps running after you close the app, but it cannot see your computer.
• Local Work runs in the desktop app on your Mac or PC. It can reach your files and apps, but only with the access you grant, and OpenAI advises granting access only to the files the task needs. The work runs locally, but OpenAI says messages and task context may still be stored in its cloud.

Which plans include Work?#

Work has no separate fee. In the new desktop app, Chat, Work and Codex are on every plan, including Free, on Mac and Windows. On web and mobile, Work is for paid plans: it reached Pro, Pro Lite, Enterprise and Edu first, then Plus and Business in the following days. Free and Go do not get Work on the web. OpenAI says Work follows Codex's usage structure, included usage plus optional credits, and how much you get depends on the plan, so check OpenAI's pricing page instead of trusting a number in a blog post, this one included.

What did people lose in the switch?#

Mostly habits and saved setups, not abilities. The complaints that keep coming up:

• The /agent command. With agent retired, users report it no longer appears, so old muscle memory lands in the wrong place.
• Scheduled agent tasks. OpenAI's help pages do not describe carrying them into Work, and users in OpenAI's community forum report recurring agent tasks that simply stopped. Check anything you had scheduled and rebuild it in Work.
• Atlas as a browser. OpenAI's Atlas help page told users to save bookmarks as an HTML file before August 9, and warned that Atlas may stop receiving security updates, so a copy still on your disk is not worth relying on.
• Browsing while signed in. In Atlas the agent used your own browser session. OpenAI now splits that work up: the new desktop app's built-in browser, which supports signing in to sites; the ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar if you stay in Chrome; and a cloud browser, which runs on OpenAI's servers and does not use your local cookies or sign-ins (on supported sites it pauses and asks you to sign in there).
• One clear name. The agent help page still carries the "no longer available" banner above instructions for the old feature.

If none of these affect you, stop here and use Work. The alternatives below are for the specific cases where Work is not the best fit.

Which ChatGPT agent mode alternative should you use?#

Start from the job you used agent mode for.

Perplexity Comet, for Atlas-style browsing#

Comet launched to a limited group on July 9, 2025, became a free download in October 2025, and has since come to Android and iOS. If you liked Atlas because the browser itself was the assistant, Comet is the nearest match.

The caveat: Comet has a documented prompt-injection history. In August 2025, Brave showed that text hidden in a web page could steer Comet's assistant into reading a user's email from another tab. In October 2025, Brave showed that near-invisible text inside screenshots could steer it too. LayerX described a separate attack, "CometJacking", that used a single crafted link. Fixes have followed the reports, and researchers keep publishing new variants. LayerX also published a report about Atlas ("Tainted Memories", October 2025), which OpenAI disputed. This is a risk of AI browsers in general, not only Comet. Don't let any AI browser act on untrusted pages while your email and bank are signed in.

Claude Cowork, for your files#

Cowork became generally available on April 9, 2026, and is included in Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. There is no free Cowork tier. It runs in the Claude desktop app on Mac and Windows, with web, iOS and Android versions in beta since July 2026. Local sessions run code in an isolated virtual machine on your computer. Cloud sessions keep going, and scheduled tasks keep running, after you close the laptop. For browser work it has a built-in browser, or Claude in Chrome.

Manus, for sandboxed cloud runs#

Manus runs each task in a cloud sandbox, so nothing touches your machine and the job finishes with your laptop closed. It uses credits. As of September 2026 Manus's help center lists a Free plan with 300 credits a day and Pro plans from $20 a month (4,000 credits) and $40 a month (8,000 credits), with larger tiers above those. The caveat: credits are spent by task complexity. A quick lookup costs little, while a long multi-step browsing and research job can use a large share of a month's credits, so the monthly cost is hard to predict until you have used it for a while. More in Manus alternatives without credits.

Where Universe fits, and where it doesn't#

For most former agent-mode users, Universe is not the answer. ChatGPT Work already covers the job, and you are already paying for it.

Universe fits a narrower group: people who want their ChatGPT plan working in their own Mac folders and signed-in browser profiles, with other models on hand and a team around the work. Concretely:

• Your ChatGPT plan runs the turns. A copy of Codex ships inside Universe and runs on your ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business login. Universe does not resell model usage and has no credits. Your plan's own limits still apply. (Background: using your ChatGPT subscription in other agent apps.)
• Claude or Gemini when it helps. Claude Code, Gemini CLI and Grok run in the same app. You can switch models mid-conversation, and the new model gets the conversation so far.
• Signed-in sites without handing over passwords. Universe copies a Chrome profile and runs its own Chrome on the copy, so the agent is already signed in. The profiles never leave the Mac. See AI agent browser tasks behind a login.
• Real files. It works in the folders you give it, and what it makes is a file you keep: a sheet, a document, a deck or an app.
• A team space. Spaces hold rooms where colleagues and agents work in one conversation.
• It asks first. Sending, paying and posting wait for you. Reading and drafting do not.

Where it is the wrong pick:

• You are not on a Mac. Universe is Mac only (Apple silicon or Intel, macOS 13 or later). There is no Windows, web or phone app.
• You want a job to finish with every computer off. Scheduled work runs on a Mac that is switched on. A second Mac can keep going while your laptop is shut, but that is not a cloud. Work's cloud mode, Cowork cloud sessions and Manus all run on the vendor's servers.
• You have no model account. Universe needs a Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok account, or a local open model.

The short version#

• Agent mode's replacement is ChatGPT Work, launched July 9, 2026, inside existing plans.
• Operator was folded into ChatGPT agent in July 2025. Atlas was set to stop working on August 9, 2026.
• If you are on the desktop and Work is missing, you are probably running ChatGPT Classic.
• Check old scheduled agent tasks, and rebuild the ones you need in Work.
• Only switch tools if one of the specific cases above describes you.
