Best AI Coworker App in 2026: 8 Compared on Three Real Jobs

The best AI coworker app is the one that can reach where your work actually lives, and whose bill you can predict. On that basis, as of September 2026: Viktor or Lindy if your team lives in Slack, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Notion or Asana if your work already sits inside one of those, and a desktop agent (Claude Cowork, the ChatGPT desktop app, or Universe) if the work is files, spreadsheets and websites you log in to.

Below, eight products are held against the same three jobs. We make one of them, Universe. The last section explains how we assessed each product and gives you the kit to re-run it.

What should count when you pick an AI coworker?#

Most ranking pages for this term are written by vendors. The most thorough, Vellum's "10 Best AI Coworkers" (23 July 2026), weights memory, integrations, credential security, surfaces and setup speed, and ranks Vellum first. Missing from its criteria are the two things that decide whether a coworker survives its first month: which model it runs on, and whether you can predict the bill.

We used five criteria, weighted by what goes wrong in practice:

What were the three test jobs?#

Three jobs that break demos:

1. A weekly report from a portal. Log in to a supplier or ad portal that has no API, pull last week's numbers, and produce a sheet with a week-on-week column plus a five-line summary. This tests reach and logins.
2. A client deck. Turn a folder of meeting notes and last quarter's numbers into a ten-slide deck where every figure traces back to a source. This tests output.
3. A morning briefing. Every weekday at 7:30, read the calendar, client email and a project folder, and write a one-page briefing without anyone opening the app. This tests unattended runs and cost.

Which AI coworkers live in Slack?#

Viktor#

Viktor describes itself as "an AI employee that lives in Slack and Microsoft Teams." It has its own computer in the cloud, where it writes and runs code, and its site lists over 3,200 integrations and recurring workflows. Pricing starts with $100 in free credits, then paid plans from $50 a month (as of September 2026). Its homepage does not say which model it runs or whether you can choose one.

• Portal report: strong where the portal has an integration. For a site that needs a human login and has no integration, check before you buy.
• Deck: it builds reports and dashboards. Slide decks are not highlighted.
• Briefing: strong. It runs in the cloud and posts in the channel your team already reads.

Lindy#

Lindy works as "a teammate in threads + mentions" in Slack, runs scheduled routines, and has computer use for sites without an integration. It is model-agnostic: you pick a model per task. As of September 2026, plans are Plus at $29.99 per user (3,000 credits), Pro at $99.99 (15,000) and Max at $199.99 (35,000). Lindy puts research and reports at 250–1,000 credits each. When the shared pool runs out, "Lindy pauses credit-using actions until your credits reset."

• Portal report: possible through computer use. Watch the credit cost of a long browser session.
• Deck: not a documented strength.
• Briefing: strong. Inbox, meetings and routines are what Lindy is built around.

Which AI coworkers run on your desktop?#

Claude Cowork#

Cowork is Anthropic's desktop agent, on paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), with a built-in browser, connectors and scheduled tasks. Anthropic's docs say scheduled tasks "run remotely", even with the computer asleep or the app closed, but a task that needs local files or apps "will only run locally", so that computer has to be awake. It runs Claude only, and it shares one usage allowance with chat and Claude Code.

• Portal report: strong while the app is open. A task that needs your signed-in browser does not run on a server schedule.
• Deck: strong. It produces files, and Claude has Excel and PowerPoint add-ins.
• Briefing: strong for email, calendar and cloud files. Weaker if the project folder is on your disk.

ChatGPT desktop app (Work and Codex)#

OpenAI has folded the Codex app into the ChatGPT desktop app: you choose ChatGPT, with Chat or Work mode for longer multi-step jobs, or Codex for software. As of September 2026, OpenAI's docs say it runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, opens documents, spreadsheets and images in the same workspace, works with plugins, and can schedule tasks, including inside a chat. It runs OpenAI models, and usage follows your ChatGPT plan.

• Portal report: strong with the built-in browser.
• Deck: strong. Slides, sheets and docs are the documented output.
• Briefing: a scheduled task can handle it. Check whether a job that needs local files needs the app open, as it does with Cowork.

Universe#

Universe is a Mac app that runs agents on your computer through the model account you already pay for: Claude Code on a Claude Pro or Max plan, Codex on a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business plan, Gemini CLI on any Google account, Grok with your xAI key, or open models running on your own machine. Add several accounts in order and, when one is rate-limited, the next runs.

• Portal report: strong. Universe copies a Chrome profile you're signed into and runs its own Chrome on the copy, so the agent is already logged in without you typing a password into a chat. More in letting an AI agent work on sites behind your login.
• Deck: strong. Decks, sheets and documents come back as real files in the session's folder, and you can share one as a snapshot link that you can revoke.
• Briefing: partial. Schedules run on a Mac, and that Mac has to be on. Linking a second Mac lets work continue while your laptop is shut (how), but there is no cloud execution.

Limits: Mac only (Apple silicon or Intel, macOS 13 or later), it needs an existing model account because Universe sells no model usage, and it is not an agent inside Slack; teams work in Universe's own shared spaces.

Which AI coworkers are built into the tools you already use?#

Notion AI agents#

Notion Agent is on the Business ($20 per member a month) and Enterprise plans. Custom Agents "run on schedules or triggers", including Slack emoji reactions, mentions and calendar events, and keep working whether you're online or not. They cost $10 per 1,000 Notion credits a month, shared across the workspace (as of September 2026). Notion's pages did not name the models.

• Portal report: only if the data reaches Notion, a connected app or the public web.
• Deck: the output is a Notion page or database, not a slide file.
• Briefing: strong, provided the inputs are in Notion and connected apps.

Microsoft 365 Copilot#

Copilot is an add-on license on top of a Microsoft 365 plan. With the full (Premium) license, it works from your organisation's email, files, meetings and calendars through Microsoft Graph. You get Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and agents that use work data. Microsoft's docs list a model selector, and Anthropic models are available in some licensed experiences. Copilot Cowork "carries out tasks across your Microsoft 365 environment", asks before sending or scheduling, and can run prompts on a schedule. We couldn't load Microsoft's price page reliably, so check the current price per user and how Cowork usage is billed on your license.

• Portal report: strong for data inside Microsoft 365. A third-party portal needs a connector or an agent.
• Deck: strong. PowerPoint is native.
• Briefing: strong for Outlook and Teams. Cowork's docs list scheduled prompts and a daily briefing skill.

Asana AI Teammates#

Asana offers more than 30 prebuilt AI Teammates, such as Project Manager, Campaign Analyst and Executive Reporter, plus custom ones, with human checkpoints built in. They're on all paid plans (Starter $10.99 and Advanced $24.99 per user a month, billed annually). The allowance is 5 requests per user per month, capped at 50 per account on Starter and Advanced and 250 on Enterprise. Extra requests cost $0.50 prepaid or $0.60 pay-as-you-go (as of September 2026).

• Portal report: only for work tracked in Asana.
• Deck: not what it's for.
• Briefing: strong for "what moved in our projects this week." Weak for email and files.

How do the best AI coworker apps compare?#

Ratings are our reading of each vendor's own documentation as of 15 September 2026. Check means we couldn't confirm it on their site, not that the feature is missing.

Which AI coworker should you pick?#

Solo, already paying for Claude or ChatGPT. Start with that vendor's own desktop app. It costs nothing extra. Move when you want both vendors' models in one place, a client in the same project, or work behind logins on a Mac; that is where Universe fits. What a subscription may power: using your Claude or ChatGPT subscription with other agent apps.

A five-person team. Decide by where the team already looks. If it's Slack, Viktor or Lindy put the work in the thread. If it's Notion, Custom Agents start with your data. If it's files handed between people and outside clients, a shared workspace fits better. In Universe, a space can be shared by email with people outside your company. A team message to people costs nothing; only a prompt to the agent costs a turn. Adding a second member to a Universe workspace needs the Max plan; see pricing.

An enterprise. Governance first. On Microsoft 365, Copilot works from data your admins already control. If projects live in Asana, AI Teammates act inside them with checkpoints. A Mac-only app is rarely the first answer for a company standardised on Windows.

Where does Universe fit, and when is something else better?#

Universe fits when the work is on a Mac, the inputs are files and sites you log in to, and you want to use a model account you already pay for instead of buying credits. It is free to start, and Pro is $19 a month (pricing). It charges for the software and adds no usage ceiling of its own, though your model plan's limits still apply. Sending, paying and posting wait for a person to press the button.

Pick something else when:

• Your team wants the agent inside Slack or Teams. Viktor or Lindy.
• A schedule must run with every computer you own switched off. A cloud product: Cowork for connectors and cloud files, Notion, Viktor or Lindy.
• You are on Windows or Linux. Cowork or the ChatGPT app.
• Your data is in Microsoft 365 and IT has to own it. Copilot.

If Universe does fit, download it and give it the portal report first. That is the job where reaching your logins matters most.

How can you re-run this comparison?#

Disclosure: we make Universe. The ratings come from each vendor's public pages, checked 15 September 2026, and Universe's own documentation. We haven't published screenshots of other vendors' outputs: a run depends on your plan, prompt and accounts, so the fair test is this kit on your own work.

For each product, use the same prompt and score each check 0 (failed), 1 (needed fixing) or 2 (right first time):

1. Portal report: "Log in to [portal], pull last week's [report], and make a sheet with one row per [item], a week-on-week column and a five-line summary." Checks: ten sampled numbers match the portal. You never pasted a password into a chat. The file opens in your spreadsheet tool. Next week's run needs no re-explaining.
2. Client deck: "From the notes in this folder and last quarter's numbers, make a ten-slide deck for [client]." Checks: every figure traces to a source. You can edit a slide without starting over. It opens where the client will view it. Note how many minutes you spent fixing it.
3. Morning briefing: "Every weekday at 7:30, read my calendar, client email and [folder], and write a one-page briefing." Checks: it ran five weekdays in a row without you opening anything. It ran with your laptop shut. It sent nothing without approval. Record what the week cost, in dollars or credits.
